Neuromodulators (Botox)

TIME: 45 minutes

Our office offers neuromodulators for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement. Botox injections are formulations of a neurotoxin called botulinum.  The primary areas that can be addressed with Botox are the forehead, the area between the eyebrows or the “11s”, and the crows feet. Botox can also be used to soften the jawline, smooth out bands in the neck, and even reduce wrinkling around the nose. Generally, the treatment lasts ~3 months and can be repeated once the effects have worn off. Patients are often concerned that using Botox once means you have to keep doing it in order to maintain results. This is not entirely true. Once it wears off you will likely want to do it again but you do not need to.

We always start with a conservative amount your first time getting the injection, as you can always add more. Generally speaking it takes 48 to 72 hours to see the full results. Though bruising can occur, a slow and delicate injection technique as well as avoiding alcohol and exercise the day of treatment minimize these effects. The primary risks associated with use in the face include accidental spread of the toxin to unintended muscles. This can lead to a droopy eyelid which must be treated with a special eyedrop called apraclonidine.

The question we are most frequently asked is in regards to the pain associated with injection. We use the smallest possible needle to perform injections and typically do not use any numbing cream for Botox as application of ice before and after the injection helps relieve any residual pain. By utilizing the latest injection techniques and talking you through the process we are able to provide an extremely comfortable and carefree experience.
